Caring for winter skin

Updated: Feb 23, 2020

Eliminate all of your winter-skin woes with a few simple tricks.

While we love winter for its warming drinks and festive activities, it can wreak havoc on our skin. The combination of cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating makes skin especially susceptible to drying out. This can lead to dull, cracked, scaly and even painful skin conditions. Similar to changing your wardrobe for cooler weather, you should also adjust your skincare regime. Here are some simple changes for bright, smooth skin in the colder months.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Since winter skin is more prone to dryness, aim for moisturizing at least twice a day instead of once, during your morning and night routine. Lather up on facial serums and body oils immediately after bathing, when skin is still damp, for easy absorption. For the face, we recommend Luscious facial serum, our most hydrating herbal blend designed specifically for dry facial skin. If you are prone to forget, keep a bottle of hydrating body oil in an area where you can frequently reach for it when you notice your skin looking dry or dull. Our favorite places are in purses, near the kitchen or bathroom sink, or in the living room - right next to your favorite seat.

Don’t forget H2O!

While it may be easy to drink less water in the winter than in the summer, that doesn’t mean we don’t need the usual 8 glasses. Some simple ways to increase your water consumption during winter months is by drinking hot tea and eating water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, spinach, and oranges.

Consider a humidifier

Humidifiers these days often also double as diffusers. This means that you can increase the humidity in your environment and make it smell great and lift your mood at the same time. Win win win! By counteracting the drying effects of indoor heating, humidifiers help skin look healthy and hydrated.

Use a gentle exfoliant

Exfoliate skin to maximize the hydrating and revitalizing effects of your skincare routine. Gentle exfoliation allows for the removal of dead, flaky, and scaly skin cells. This makes way for the growth of new, healthy cells. Our sugar scrubs do just that while simultaneously moisturizing skin thanks to its super ingredient, sweet almond oil. Found in all of our scrubs, sweet almond oil is rich in vitamin E and is known for its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of exfoliant and moisturizer in our sugar scrubs helps repair and heal damaged winter skin.

Adjust the temperature

Cleanse your skin with warm, not hot water. Hot water has a dehydrating effect on the skin, stripping it of its natural oils. For this reason it’s best to aim for short, warm showers instead of baths.

Spray frequently

Use one of our aromatherapy sprays around you or on your person. In a pinch, it is easier than applying body oil and introduces moisture into your environment. These sprays are also a 100% natural facial toning spray, we recommend trying Cheerful Citrus or Lovely Lavender for a perfect pick-me-up anytime of the day or night. All of our sprays are water based and multitask as a perfume, air-freshener, and an instant hydrating brain and skin boost.

Don’t skip the sunscreen

While the sun may not be visible, UVA rays still penetrate through clouds, leading to serious skin damage. This can further exacerbate problems of winter skin. We recommend a natural sunscreen, such as zinc oxide to protect from the harmful rays.

Enjoy the cozy wintertime and stay beautiful, naturally!
